Evaluation of the application effect of fluorine free waterproof finishing agent

With the increasingly strict national environmental protection standards, enterprises’ understanding of environmental protection production is gradually increasing. The promotion and application of new technologies, processes, and equipment for energy conservation and environmental protection will be the trend. In the current era where ecological protection is becoming a new label in China’s textile industry, green textile chemicals are receiving increasing attention within the industry. Fluorine free waterproof finishing agents are more easily accepted by consumers and the market as a type of green textile chemicals. With the continuous deepening of research and development on fluorine-free waterproofing agents, the application effect of fluorine-free waterproofing agents is constantly improving, and their market demand is also increasing.

 

In practical applications, it has been found that compared with fluorine-containing waterproof finishing agents, the advantages of fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents include:
1. The product does not contain prohibited raw materials such as PFOS and PFOA, and will not deposit in living organisms. It is easy to degrade and is a safer and more environmentally friendly product. At the same time, it also meets the waterproof performance requirements of countries and regions such as Europe and America;
2. Has certain advantages in terms of price;
3. Some foreign brands producing fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents can apply for fluorine-free waterproof tags to enhance the brand effect of this functional textile product;
4. Fluorine free waterproof finishing agent can be used alone in waterproof products, such as textile fabrics such as tents, or can be used in combination with fluorine-containing C6 waterproof finishing agent to improve the oil resistance of the fabric;
5. High quality fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents have good washing resistance in some synthetic fiber fabrics, and their washing resistance is almost the same as fluorine-containing waterproof products;
6. It has a soft texture and has little effect on the yellowing of the whitened fabric, while significantly improving the hand scratch phenomenon in dark colored fabrics;
7. It does not affect the peel strength of subsequent coating, bonding and other processing of the fabric;
8. It does not affect the original color fastness to light, dry friction, and wet friction of the fabric;
9. There is a significant improvement in the tear resistance of the fabric.

 

At present, there are also some problems with the use of fluorine free waterproof finishing agents:
1. Fluorine free waterproof finishing agents are only suitable for waterproof finishing of fabrics, and some textile products that require three proof finishing still need to use fluorocarbon series three proof finishing agents;
2. Different fiber materials require the selection of suitable fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents for fabrics. Some fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents have matching requirements for fabric materials, and it is recommended to focus on the waterproof grade and the effect of washing resistance;
3. Some fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents with certain structures are prone to roller sticking problems under conditions such as increased working fluid temperature and pH changes, as well as prolonged immersion and rolling. Therefore, it is necessary to pay attention to control during production and application;
4. The fabric to be sorted must be free of residual paste, dyeing aids, silicon compounds, etc., otherwise it may reduce the waterproof effect. If the cleanliness of the fabric before sorting is found to be poor, it needs to be thoroughly washed to remove residual surfactants;
5. To ensure the stability of the working solution of the fluorine free waterproof finishing agent, it is recommended to add 0.3g/L acetic acid (mass fraction of 80%) to adjust the pH value of the working solution, in order to achieve the best effect of the fluorine free waterproof finishing agent;
6. Choose appropriate baking conditions to ensure that the fabric and waterproof finishing agent are fully cross-linked, but excessive temperature or time may reduce the waterproof effect of the fabric and cause changes in the color and light of the fabric surface;
7. Fluorine free waterproof finishing agent products are very sensitive to storage temperature. It is recommended not to store them in environments below 0 ℃ or above 40 ℃ to prevent changes in product performance;
8. Fluorine free waterproof finishing agents are usually weakly cationic and can be compatible with cationic and non-ionic additives. If other chemicals are needed to obtain a special feel, silicone softeners should also be avoided as much as possible. Fatty acid ester softeners can be used in the same bath, but tests must be conducted before use;
9. If any dyeing defects are found on the fabric after fluorine free waterproof treatment, they cannot be directly re dyed and repaired in the tank to avoid the precipitation of waterproof additives and the formation of new defects on the fabric. Therefore, before repairing the fabric, the waterproof treatment agent should be peeled off.

 

At present, some domestic and foreign brands have promised not to use waterproof finishing products containing harmful chemicals. The application range of fluorocarbon waterproof agents will be strictly limited, and textile products using fluorine free waterproof finishing will be increasingly recognized by the market. Gradually improving the waterproofing and washing resistance of fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents, as well as developing fluorine-free three proof finishing agents with both oil and dirt resistance functions, will be the future development trend of waterproof finishing agents. At the same time, research on the optimization of raw material development for fluorine-free waterproof finishing agents will become more mature and complete, in order to achieve sustained improvement in waterproof performance.
